Apologetics Study Bible for Students (Giveaway)

    I have looked at many different student study Bibles and I have to say that the Apologetics Study Bible for Students is one of my favorites. This HCSB translation Bible includes many features designed to help students grow in their faith and learn to articulate that faith to others. These features include:

• 120 Articles that answer the most commonly asked questions about the Christian faith.  Some of the topics included are “What does the Bible say about Homosexuality?” “Does God want me to be rich?”  “What’s the big deal with astrology?” “How can a person get into heaven?” and “In what ways did Jesus fulfill prophecies?”  Questions cover all the foundations of the Christian faith as well as application to contemporary issues.
• Study notes: Footnotes at the bottom of each page explain the difficult issues.
• Twisted Scriptures: Clarification of passages that are often distorted by cults.
• Bones and Dirt: Describes archeological findings that support scripture
• Personal stories of heroes of the faith and of ordinary people
• Notable Quotes that encourage and motivate

I’ve spent some time this week reading through parts of the Apologetics Study Bible for Students and am very impressed. The study notes are very helpful for explaining scripture and adding background information without seeming so scholarly that the reader would want to skip them. The articles include great questions, including many that are current hot topic issues. Even though this is a Bible that my teenager will use, I plan to spend some time with it myself, because I really feel that the apologetics features are applicable for anyone. I’ve seen teen Bibles that are much more focused on specifically “teen” issues. Unlike those, this study Bible can certainly be used well beyond the teen years without seeming too “young.”

The formatting is very attractive and the print is a nice readable size.

An additional feature is the indexing that makes it easy to turn quickly to the desired Bible book.

My 15 year old says that she loves all the questions and answers and the explanations of difficult concepts. She said that it would be very helpful for anyone with questions about faith and that she could relate to the personal stories. She also loved the index tabs. Since she spent 3 hours reading the Bible this afternoon, I’m definitely giving it two thumbs up!

Dial Boutique Collection (Giveaway)

As a member of the Purex Insiders group, I was recently able to try a free bottle of Dial Sugar Cane Husk Scrub, a deep cleansing moisturizing hand soap. This new addition to Dial’s Boutique Collection of hand soaps has micro-scrubbers and has a scent “inspired by freshly cut sugar cane.

The bottle looks pretty—always something I appreciate, and the scent is wonderful! Emily really loved it and noticed that her hands smelled nice for a long time after use. I also caught her just smelling the soap bottle!

The first day I had my new Dial soap out on the counter, I had been doing some cleaning with bleach, cleaning algae and mildew off the side of our house. I really hate the way the the bleach smell stays on my hands for hours (and seldom remember to wear gloves when working with bleach). However, this time, I washed my hands with the Sugar Cane Husk Scrub and went about my way. A little while later, I realized that there was NO bleach smell at all on my hands. The soap had managed to remove it all!

This is one of my favorite Dial scents, so I know I will enjoy continuing to use this variety.

Making Your Own Homeschool Games (And a Free Bible Trivia Game!)

 

Do you like to play games? Most kids do! At our house, we often play games as part of our school day. There are many games that you can buy to practice or learn different subjects. We have a lot of those, but we like to make our own games, too. Almost every subject can be made into a game. Here are a few ideas:

1. Use a board game that you already have. Make some question cards about anything you are learning. For example, you could make a set of questions about reptiles or the Civil War or planets. Write a question on one side of the card and the answer on the other side. Each player must answer a question correctly before he or she takes a turn.

2. Make a matching game to practice something you are learning. You could write a math fact on one card and the answer on its match. You could name an inventor on one card and his invention on the other or a vocabulary word on one card and its definition on the other. 3x5 inch index cards cut in half are a nice size to use. Place the cards face down on the table and take turns turning them over looking for matches.

3. Write historical events on cards. Write the date the event occurred on the back of the card. Try to arrange the events in sequence, then check yourself by looking at the dates.

4. Regular playing cards can be used for math games. Here's one idea. Take out all the face cards. Divide the remaining cards into 2 equal stacks. Play "War" with the cards to practice "greater than" and "less than." To make the game harder, flip 2 cards over on each turn. Add the numbers together (if you are learning addition facts) or multiply the numbers (if you are practicing multiplication facts). The person with the highest total collects all the cards for that round.

5. Divide a large sheet of paper into 9 rectangles. Write a number from 1 to 9 in each space. Toss 2 or 3 beans onto the paper, then add or multiply those numbers together. Take turns with another player to see who can reach the highest score. Write fractions in some or all of the spaces to make the game harder.

6. Give each player 10 number cards from a regular card deck. Roll a die. Each player uses any number of his cards to create an equation that will equal the number on the die. For example, if the die shows a 4, a player could make 2x2 or 6-2 or 3x3-5 or 2x6-8. Each player writes down his equations and the player with the most correct equations in two minutes wins that round.
